If you’re looking for an interesting shopping experience while in Chiang Mai, look no farther than the Baan Tawai Creative Village located about 20 minutes from downtown on the outskirts in the Khunkhong sub district of Hangdong. The largest handicraft village of its kind in Thailand, Baan Tawai has a very large number of shops offering an equally diverse range of items from wood carvings to stone carvings to fabrics and everything in between. Even if you do not buy anything, its a great day trip because the village is charming and there’s always restaurants featuring tasty menus. But the temptation to procure a souvenir is great because the artists are often working in the shops. Good quality original items can be found here for attractive prices in virtually every price range and in every size and shape. If you fall in love with a piece thats larger than your suitcase can handle, fear not, overseas shipping arrangements can be made in the village. Here’s a photo sampling from our shopping day trip.
