This is private tour is perfectly suited to persons, couples, or a group of friends who want to combine the convenience of having your own private guide and transport for several days while you explore Chiang Mai and the surrounding areas. It's best to book this tour in advance such that you begin this tour immediately upon your arrival. You are returned to your hotel every night providing you with ample free time during evenings.

Active Chiang Mai gives you a good taste of everything including trips to interesting restaurants, markets, pagoda's, temples, hiking trails and cycling all the while never too far from your private guided transportation. You will experience nature, cultural and get a good taste of life in rural northern Thailand.

On the first day we will hike from one side of Doi Suthep-Doi Pui National Park to the Mae Sa Valley. The next day you will explore the typical landscape of Northern Thailand by bicycle and will visit a former leprosy colony, one of the hidden gems of the North, and the fascinating ruins of Wiang Kum Kam, also called the “Atlantis” of Lanna.

Morning arrival in Chiang Mai. Your guide and driver will meet you at the airport or at the railway station.The guide will take you for lunch at one of our favorite riverside restaurants. After this we continue to the most famous markets of Chiang Mai, the adjoining Warorot and Ton Lamyai markets. Your guide will take you around and will let you taste some of the typical Northern Thai delicacies for sale here. We will also visit a Chinese pagoda in what is Chiang Mai’s Chinatown. You will learn about the history of these colorful markets.Return to the hotel in the mid to late afternoon with the rest of the day free at leisure. Overnight at Amora Hotel – Superior Room


The tour guide and driver will meet you at the hotel at 0730. Drive to Suthep Mountain. Time of departure is flexible but we advise a very early departure, preferably around sunrise.First we will visit Wat Doi Suthep before the crowds arrive. Walk up the 300 steps up to the temple from where you have a majestic view over Chiang Mai. We continue to Doi Pui Village, a Hmong community, close to top of Doi Pui.Your guide will tell you about the turbulent history of this community. In the past the village was involved in opium cultivation. Nowadays the village is a major tourist attraction on Doi Suthep. We walk around the village before we meet our local Hmong guide who will accompany us on our hike to the Hmong village Ban Mae Sa Mai in the Mae Sa Valley. This hike will take about five hours including stops. We start hiking through the forest. The local Hmong guide will tell about the flora and about the history of opium cultivation on this mountain. You will also be stimulated to recognize certain plants and trees in the forest with the tree and plant leaflet we will provide you with. If you want you can collect tree seeds that will be delivered at the FORRU* tree nursery of Ban Mae Sa Mai.After a walk uphill we will arrive at an open area with fantastic views on both sides of the mountain. We will stop briefly to look at a footprint of Buddha before enjoying a picnic lunch at a scenic spot. We will continue through the forest to the Hmong village Ban Mae Sa Mai. This village is the largest Hmong community in Northern Thailand and gets very few visitors a marked contrast with Doi Pui Hmong Village.Drive back to the hotel.Overnight at Amora Hotel – superior room* FORRU is the forest restoration unit of Chiang Mai University


We transfer you to Ban Khanomtom in Saraphi, a district about 12 kms south of Chiang Mai. Here your bikes will be waiting for you. While you enjoy a refreshment we will brief you on the upcoming tour. We will start with a tour through the village before we cycle through a beautiful area of fruit trees to the McKean Rehabilitation Centre. This used to be leprosy colony and is now dedicated to the help of disadvantaged and needy people. We cycle over the McKean compound and admire the centuries old trees.By this time of day it will start to become hot. We will have lunch at a beautiful teakwooden restaurant that specializes in Northern Thai food Before we ride our bikes to beautiful Chedi Liam where our car is waiting to bring you back to the hotel.Rest of the afternoon free at leisure.


Breakfast included. Where to Meet:

Your guide will meet you at the hotel in Chiang Mai or, in case you arrive on the morning flight from Bangkok, at the Chiang Mai Airport, the train station or the bus station. We just need to know your Chiang Mai arrival plans in advance. Email us at so we can coordinate your pick up location in Chiang Mai. The guide and driver can meet you at any of those locations. Keep in mind that trains are often not on schedule. Please provide time of arrival, flight number if airport or any other means of identifying method of arrival. Flights are preferred due to consistency.

Guest cancelling within these time periods, fees will apply as follows: 

  • 15 days prior to departure, full refund less 10% of tour booking 
  • 3 to 14 days prior to departure, full refund less 25% of tour booking  
  • less than 72 hours, refund less 50% of tour booking 
  • less than 24 hours or no show, 100% of tour booking fee is non refundable
