It starts with a visit to Lahu Outpost and the Lahu ethnic hill tribe people. Moving on to Lisu Lodge on day 2 where you can enjoy the lush beautiful surroundings of this resort set in a Lisu Village. The food is delicous here and its a truly relaxing atomosphere. 

Leaving the 2 hill tribe resorts behind, we move to Khum Lanna Lodge on day 3 for your Thai cooking class and a variety of activities such as cycling, herbal steam baths and massages. Accommodations, meals and drinks are included as well as English speaking tour guides. The guides at Lisu Lodge are a joy to talk with. 

At Khum Lanna you  will receive a “Khum Lanna Thai Recipe Book” with many delicious recipes. Visiting the local Thai farmers market is always  a highlight, not to mention having your choice of  a guided biking tour around Khum Lanna country side or Fruit (or vegetable) carving. If you just prefer to relax you can have a local herbal steam bath to relax and rejuvenate your body,  Need to get some good exercise and see more sights? No problem, you can always go cycling by yourself.

Tour Itinerary & Map (below)


9:00 am: Pick up and depart from hotel in Chiang Mai (city center) by joint open air local truck 10:00 am you will arrive at the Lisu Lodge. A traditional welcome drink will be served. Then, drive by local open-air truck to the area near Pha Mieng. Start walking along the jungle trails to the remote village of Hmong Pha Mieng (1h30). Meet the inhabitants of this small hill tribe village in the jungle. Enjoy a picnic lunch in the forest. After lunch, walk to the top of the mountain (1h30) where the Red Lahu Village of Pha Daeng is located Continue walking along a mountain ridge to the Lahu village of Kup Kap (1h00), from where you have a spectacular view overlooking the Mae Taeng district and Chiang Mai town glittering at night in the distance. Beyond the mountain peaks to the west lies Myanmar (Burma). Dinner and overnight at Lahu Outpost, modeled on a typical Lahu house. Basic amenities are provided: mattress, pillow, bed linen, blankets, towels, mosquito nets, etc. Two Western-style toilets and a communal shower are provided.


After an early breakfast, we go on a one and a half hour walk down a steep jungle path passing by the Huay Sadharn Waterfall. This brings us to the spot where we will mount the elephants and continue on a one hour ride down to the river. In a remarkable setting on the bank of the river we first enjoy a delicious picnic lunch. Afterwards we go rafting down the river for about 45 minutes. From there you return to Lisu Lodge. Upon arrival, a welcome drink will be served before you check into your room. Afterwards you will receive a briefing so you can select your activity for the following morning. Guided by a Lisu villager, walk from Ton Lung temple to visit the herbal garden. Then continue through the village with a stop for a cup of tea at the village shaman’s house. Chat with the Lisu shaman and learn about his life, beliefs, curing rites and Lisu traditions. Time at leisure until Thai dinner with a traditional Lisu dance show.Overnight at Lisu Lodge.


Breakfast at the lodge. In the morning you have a choice of activities: Guided bike tour around the Lisu Lodge area, Steam bath, Massage, Ox-cart ride through farmlands and orchards to the Thai village of Baan Pang Mai Daeng - about an hour ending up back at Lisu are welcome to go cycling by yourself and we will give you a road book of recommended itineraries. Transfer by local truck to Chiang Dao and to an ethnic Karen village. Picnic lunch en route. Start with a 2-hour soft trek through the tropical forest to end up at a traditional Lahu village. After a visit with the Lahu mountain people, transfer to Khum Lanna. Upon arrival, as a welcome drink, enjoy a refreshing herbal tea or fruit juice from the bountiful gardens of Khum Lanna itself. Check-in to your room. Briefing to decide on your activities for the following morning. 17h00: Thai cooking introduction; get a free Khum Lanna recipe book and start a first lesson to learn to prepare an authentic Thai meal (4 dishes). All the major ingredients in Thai cooking are introduced along with the concept of balancing the 5-flavor groups. Time at leisure until dinner. Enjoy the Thai dinner that you helped prepare yourself. Overnight at Khum Lanna.


5:30am: Coffee/tea will be brought to your room for your wake-up call before the sunrise biking trip along the rural country road via San Kwang village to Phrao to visit an early morning local market where local coffee is available. With the help of your guide you may buy local cookies and flower garlands for the temple offering on the way back. Then you visit a farmer’s rice and traditional tools shop, chat with the owner, and learn more about the rice legends and differences & properties of the varieties of rice. Your local escort will translate. Bike back to Khum Lanna with a stop to visit Wat Pa. Pay respect to the Buddha image under the sacred tree. Continue biking to Khum Lanna along the local canal through the rice fields and get more information about the rice-growing process and the important place that rice occupies in Thai life. 9:00am Refreshment or shower before breakfast is served. 10:00am, Lanna’s concept is “Rice for Life”. You will be given an orientation of this concept and also learn about the history of rice cultivation, the types, the equipment used in the past and the future needs. Try your cooking skills out by steaming the Thai sticky rice and following this take a casual walk to the organic garden where we have a variety of produce including the different rice harvesting stages.You will also have the opportunity to collect herbs and vegetables from the garden and use these in your cooking class. 11:00am: You will receive a “Khum Lanna Thai Recipe Book” that explains many delicious recipes, plus the herbs used and the health benefits of each. Lunch will include a country style Barbeque, sticky rice that you prepared earlier, and all the scrumptious dishes to complement. We will also give you descriptions of Thai words that will be helpful for your market visit the following day. 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm: Choose one of the exciting following (approx. one-hour) activities: A Guided biking tour around Khum Lanna country side. Creative Fruit (or vegetable) carving , A local herbal steam bath to relax and rejuvenate your body, A therapeutic Hot-pressed herbal massage (consisting of 8 kinds of herbs: ginger, zingier, lemongrass, plantain, tamarind leaves, soap pod, camphor and Aom Kiew). Notes: You are welcome to go cycling by yourself. We will give you a road book of recommended itineraries. 4:00 pm. End of program and transfer from Khum Lanna to hotel in Chiang Mai by joint open air truck.

Good to Know

This tour is on a join in basis. Bookings require that a minimum of 2 people traveling together. Guests should be healthy and in good physical condition. Weather conditions can impose changes in the program or the cancellation of activities. Guests need to bring a copy of their passport & Thai visa page with stamp into Thailand.

Trekking Level of Difficulty:

This trekking is easy. The trails in the forest around Lisu Lodge are pleasant but sometimes a bit slippery. Expect to be trekking about 2 to 3 hours per day with some ascents and descents. This is enjoyable for almost anyone. 


Lisu Lodge and Khum Lanna are non air-conditioned rooms with electric fan making for an authentic natural experience. Hot nights are not a concern during November to March. 


On the last day, a second additional 1-hour activity can be booked at a nominal charge but as a free activity you are welcome to go cycling by yourself and we will give you a road book of recommended itineraries.

Booking the Tour:

  • Price in USD, minimum 2 persons per booking or add single supplement fee for solo traveler.
  • Allow up to 24 hours for to confirm your booking after you submit your request to us.
  • Please note that pricing is per person.
  • Transfers from Chiang Mai are extra, cost is $15 per person each way. By local truck which could be a van or pick up. It's part of the experience!

  • One day and No show : Forfeit 100 % of tour rate
