Here you are at the birthplace of Khmer architecture and a  boutique floating hotel is the perfect setting for a timeless Mekong River downstream journey through the landscapes of Southern Laos. The Mekong which swells after the rainy season sometimes resembles a lake and behold the Si Phun Don, a stunning collection of 4,000 islands in the river, all this before you discover Southeast Asia’s largest waterfalls at Pha Pheng.

Your adventure begins at the meeting point; the Sinouk Coffee House in Pakse, Laos at 9.30 a.m.

9:30 am. ThIs is the meeting at Sinouk Coffee House in the centre of Pakse,  you will be transferred to a long-tail boat for a 2.5 hour journey to Champasak. You are welcomed on board with a drink and a set lunch menu is served. The highlight of the trip in the afternoon is to take some local transportation and visit Vat Phou ruins and museum; the majestic pre-Angkorian 10th century temple complex. You are transferred back to the boat to enjoy the tropical sunset on the deck. A set menu dinner is served on board and the boat docks for the night at Ban Muang.


6:00 am. The boat departs early and a continental breakfast is served on board starting at 7:00 am. The first stop is at Huei Thamo village in order to visit some rural life and a mysterious hidden forest temple called ‘Oum Muong’. After you are back on board, the boat starts to cruise southwards passing by the wilderness paradise of ‘4,000 Islands’. 12:00 A set menu lunch is served on board. By late afternoon the second stop is at Ban Deua Tia where you can walk through this small Laotian village to observe a traditional way of life. 6:00 A set menu dinner is served on board and the boat docks for a night at Ban Deua Tia.


6:00 am. The Vat Phou boat departs from the previous nights mooring. 7:00    A continental breakfast is served at the restaurant10:00  The boat stops at Ban Veuthong where you are transferred by a small boat to Khone Island. You will visit the old French railway and walk across a bridge which links Khone Island and Det Island.  After this, you are transferred to the mainland by a small boat to Xieng Di fishing village. 12:00  A buffet lunch  is served at a local restaurant. A bus transfers you to Pha Pheng waterfall also known as ‘The Niagara of The East’ 4:00   You will arrive by bus back in Pakse in the late afternoon and this is the conclusion of your tour. From here you can spend a night or two in Pakse or fly to Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City, Siem Reap, Vientiane and Luang Prabang. 

Good to Know

Departure Information:

  • This is a downstream cruise from Pakse in Laos to Champasak and on to Vat Phou
  • From November 1 to April 30  the cruise departs every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday 
  • From May 1 to September 30, 2014 the cruise departs every Saturday

Access and Transfer Information:

You can fly from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani with Nok Air and transfer from Ubon Ratchathani by mini-van or taxi to the Thai / Laos border near Pakse. 

Transfer arrangements can be made with pick-up at the airport in Ubon Ratchathani or from your hotel if you spend a night there. You cross the border into Laos at the Chong Mek border crossing and from there taxi into the center of Pakse to the Sinouk Coffee House, your meeting point for this tour. Please be at the Sinouk Coffee House ideally before 9:00 am. 

Or you can fly direct from Bangkok direct to Pakse. There are direct flights to Pakse from Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City, Siem Reap, Vientiane and Luang Prabang. 

Supplemental Information About this Tour:

Please bring a jersey or a jacket as it can get cool on the boat in evening in December and early January.

Conclusion of the Tour:

A bus takes you back to Pakse after which the service for this tour is concluded.

Single Supplement Fee

  • The single supplement fee amount will auto complete on the booking page if you select one guest. The single supplement fee is $273. 

Child Policy

  • The fee for children aged 2 to 12 years old assumes that the child will be sharing the parents cabin. Children older than age 12 are charged as adults. Child rates will appear on the booking page when you select the number of children in your party.

Refund / Cancellation / No show Policy

If the guest cancels the trip, the following applies. Number of days prior to the tour start date:

  • 45 days or more - full refund less 5% of tour price
  • 44 to 30 days - full refund less 50% of tour price
  • 29 to 8 days - refund less 75% of tour price
  • 8 days prior and no show - forfeit 100% of tour price

Guaranteed Departure

Vat Phou Cruise Tour Operator reserves the right to only commit to providing services for each Package in case where there are minimum of 4 adult passengers on board the boat. 

Late Arrival of Passenger

Vat Phou Cruise Operator is not obliged to provide other vehicles such as speed boat, local boat or van to their cruise for any late arrival passengers. A passenger shall be liable for any incurred costs caused by late arrival to departure of the cruise and shall not be entitled to claim for any damages or compensation.

Vat Phou Cruise Operator provides safety boxes at Luang Say lodge’s office and on board the t Vat Phou in the Cruise Manager’s cabin. The insurance company engaged and provided by the cruise operator shall be liable for the limit of Marine Hull & Machinery and Protection and Indemnity insurance at USD 5,000,000 per event. Coverage Exclusion: loss of cash, negotiable instruments, precious metals or stones, valuables or objects of a rare or precious nature, belonging to persons. 

Rate Increases

Vat Phou Cruise Operator reserves the right to increase fees if government agencies increase taxes without adequate notice and they  reserves the right to increase fees if the price of oil exceeds $120 USD per barrel 45 days before guest departure.

  • Converted in 1993 into a luxurious floating hotel from a ferry that carried teak wood from Vientiane, Laos.
  • The Vat Phou Ship is 34 meters long and 7.5 meters wide
